In an affront to the drab, brown February that lurks outside, the interior of the Maverick Innovation Lab is brightly lit and welcoming; crisp white tablecloths pretend they’ll stay that way, new, sleek signs bring new life to the white walls, and good humored lab partners direct attendees to help themselves to the catered food to accompany the custom cocktails provided by Twisted Path Distillery. As guests settle into their seats, everyone is waiting to see what the second M!L Talk event has in store for them.
The M!L Talk Series has been created to provide an ongoing thought-leadership series where experts are invited to offer thought-provoking material on innovative thinking, creativity, disruptive processes or products, as well as other 21st century business topics and trends. Former FBI hostage negotiator and distinguished author, Chris Voss, wrote “Never Split The Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It,” with his son, Brandon Voss, and founded The Black Swan Group. The BSG team helps overcome communication challenges in business though the application of negotiation techniques. “Negotiation Essentials” and the ever cool, calm, and collected Chris Voss, instilled that there is a BIG difference between the responses “you’re right” and “that’s right,” that you diffuse the negative by identifying the negative, and that “an epiphany moment is disruptive.” At the lab, we are all about disruption – it is almost synonymous with innovation.
Finally, if you’re going to try negotiating with a hostage negotiator, you should know, it’s going to be horrible.
